Key Card Materials for Tropical Climates

Our standard hotel card format is CR80, 85.6 × 54 mm and 0.76 mm thick. Within that familiar shape, the body material controls edge feel, print behaviour, visible variation and tolerance for the conditions found around an island property.

The embedded credential remains a separate specification. We manufacture the approved card body around 125 kHz LF or 13.56 MHz HF/NFC technology only after the installed system requirement has been confirmed.

Recycled PVC is the most stable direction when a front desk expects a familiar card, strong colour reproduction and repeatable appearance across a long run. It tolerates ordinary contact with wet hands and sunscreen better than fibre-led bodies, although no printed surface should be treated as immune to abrasion or chemical exposure.

For high-volume all-inclusive properties in Jamaica or large water-facing resorts in the Bahamas, that consistency can matter more than a visibly natural surface. We approve colour and finish on the actual construction, then hold the production reference for reorders.

Wooden cards show grain and tone rather than hiding them. The surface can carry restrained print or engraving, but natural variation remains visible from one card to another. That makes the card feel intentional in a boutique or villa setting and unsuitable where exact visual uniformity is the primary approval criterion.

A Barbados or Turks and Caicos property using the card as a quiet brand object often benefits from that variation. The proof establishes layout, contrast and acceptable grain direction; it cannot make every piece of wood identical.

Plant-based board provides a fibre-led card direction with a printable face and a different material story from conventional plastic. We keep every sourcing, content and disposal statement tied to the evidence for the exact supplied construction. Appearance alone never supports a certification claim.

This body belongs in a dry issue-and-carry pattern. It can suit a room-card-led boutique property, but it is not produced as a substitute for a wristband at a pool, beach or spa where immersion and continuous body contact are normal.

Matte, gloss, engraved and printed finishes behave differently under repeated handling. We test the selected combination on the actual body because the same artwork can appear sharper on recycled PVC, quieter on wood and softer on a fibre surface.

The reverse face also remains production space. Numbering, return instructions and operational marks are placed so they stay readable without turning a restrained island-hospitality card into a notice board.

We approve the body, edge, colour and finish together on a physical sample whenever the material direction makes appearance or handling critical. That sample becomes the reference for the production run and the next reorder; a digital visual remains useful for layout but cannot demonstrate surface feel or natural variation.

Inspection follows the characteristics of the material. Recycled PVC is checked for print and construction consistency, wood against the accepted range of grain and tone, and plant-based board against the approved surface and edge condition. The product is judged against its own honest specification rather than against a different substrate.

A paper- or fibre-led card is wrong for continuous wet use. Wood is wrong when the approval requires every unit to match exactly. A conventional card of any material is wrong where guests must wear the credential through water activity and no holder has been specified.

We stop the material direction at that point and manufacture the body that fits the actual use. A fashionable substrate is not a successful product if the property has to protect it from the environment it was ordered for.
