Pphbio hotel keycards are manufactured from PPH BioBoard — compressed wood pulp fiber. The material is neither paper (too soft and moisture-sensitive for keycard use) nor plastic (no petroleum-derived polymers of any kind). It is a genuinely novel eco substrate: a processed cellulose material derived from wood that achieves the structural rigidity and moisture resistance required for hotel keycard use across a typical guest stay.
The pphbio keycard is the right choice for properties that want to eliminate plastic from their guest credential entirely, but prefer the familiar flat card format over the distinctive grain of wood keycards. Pphbio has a premium natural matte surface with a tactile quality that distinguishes it immediately from conventional PVC — guests notice the difference. It occupies the same CR80 form factor (85.6 × 54 mm, 0.76 mm thickness) and operates on the same MIFARE-compatible lock readers as any conventional keycard.
What Makes Pphbio Different from Paper
Paper keycards have been attempted in the hospitality industry and generally failed due to insufficient durability — they soften with moisture, delaminate at the edges, and cannot withstand the handling conditions of a hotel stay. PPH BioBoard is a compressed, processed cellulose material that has been engineered for structural performance. Its moisture resistance is adequate for normal in-pocket, wallet, and handbag use throughout a standard hotel stay. It is not paper.
MIFARE Compatibility and Lock System Integration
Pphbio keycards are available with MIFARE Classic 1K, DESFire EV2, and DESFire EV3 chip options. The RFID chip and antenna are embedded within the card structure during manufacturing — the plant-based substrate has no effect on the RFID performance. The lock reader reads the chip data, not the card material. Pphbio keycards encode on all standard front desk encoding equipment compatible with your lock system, with no modifications required.
Lock system compatibility covers VingCard Signature, VingCard Vostio, dormakaba Ambiance, SALTO SVN, Onity Director, and Kaba Ilco systems. Caribbean RFID confirms your specific lock model and software version before manufacturing.
Printing and Branding
Pphbio's natural fiber surface is receptive to CMYK digital printing, enabling full-colour branded keycards with your property's logo, artwork, and guest messaging. Print quality on the natural matte surface has a distinctly different aesthetic from PVC — warmer, more organic — that often reinforces a property's eco positioning rather than compromising it. Matte or gloss laminate coating is available as a print finish option.
End-of-Life and Sustainability Claims
Pphbio keycards are biodegradable in industrial composting conditions. This means a property that switches from conventional PVC keycards to pphbio eliminates plastic waste from the guest credential entirely — and can communicate this to guests and sustainability certifiers. For Green Globe, Travelife, and EarthCheck certification bodies, the shift from virgin PVC to a genuinely plastic-free keycard is a documentable, certifiable sustainability improvement.
